1942

Mike firing the sniper scope equipped with Gillinder filter over the spotlight attached to the rifle.

During World War II Myron (Mike) Klein was a soldier at The Army Engineer Research Laboratory at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He was involved in testing the infrared glass filters used on the first Sniper Scopes. Gillinder Glass infrared filters were placed over spotlights attached to the soldiers’ rifles and enabled them to see and shoot in the dark. Many thousands were produced in the Gillinder factory in Port Jervis, New York to support our troops.

Gillinder is pleased to have played an important support role for our military then and now.

THE MIDDLE YEARS
Following the failure of the 1979 rescue attempt during the Iranian hostage crisis, the 1980’s and 1990’s saw an increased demand for the development of night vision compatible glass rings, cap filters and flat filters for aircraft instrumentation and cockpit lighting. Night vision compatible glass for use with Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS) became a necessity for military, aerospace and mission critical industries.

NVIS Equipped Cockpit

The demand continued to grow as the number of former military pilots took control of the cockpits in the exponentially increasing cargo airline fleets. These pilots were trained using Night Vision Goggles and preferred to continue to use them in their new avocations, particularly as they frequently encounter bad weather and fly at night. Recognizing this trend, military and civilian airfields have also begun equipping runways and other ground equipment with NVIS compatible lighting.

2017
As we have each time our country has asked, Gillinder has responded. Today we offer a complete line of NVIS compatible lead-free glass tiles for use in making rings, caps, and filters. All compositions are lead–free and meet the requirements of MIL-STD-3009, MIL-L-85762A, and humidity resistivity test of MIL-STD-810E. Each composition offers color consistency, high transmission, low NVIS radiance, excellent internal quality and 3rd party certified environmental durability. These advanced compositions are currently offered in two forms:

  1. Standard blank forms are 6.5” square with a 6.0” square of guaranteed usable area. Thicknesses start at .275” (7mm) but can be made to order for particular customer thickness requirements upon request.
  2. Compositions can also be provided as finished flat filters, polished and/or diffused, and cut to size for a particular application. We are told our NVIS compatible glass is easier and faster to work which reduces your finishing times. And we also stock all of the normal colors.
