  • The History of Gillinder Glass- Two Centuries in the Making

The year 2023 marks two centuries since the birth of Gillinder Glass’ founder, William Thynne Gillinder. The new year also marks Gillinder’s hundredth year of being incorporated under the name Gillinder Brothers Inc.. In honor of these anniversaries, Gillinder has dug through its physical and digital archives to present the story of Gillinder's first one hundred years. Gillinder History: The First Century is a look of William Gillinder’s journey and the early days of Gillinder Glass. The story explains, Gillinder Glass’ inception was in 1861 when “William Gillinder would purchase the Samuel’s Bottle Factory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and create Philadelphia Flint Glass Works, which would begin the over 160-year history of Gillinder Glass.” Collectors and historians have found many trade names for Gillinder, which have included: William T. Gillinder Glass Factory, Franklin Flint Glass Works, Gillinder & Bennett, Gillinder & Sons, and Gillinder Brothers. Gillinder Brothers was established in 1912 and incorporated in 1923 and has primarily operated out of Port Jervis, New York ever since. • Vapor Proof Globes

Gillinder Glass produces a broad variety of glass products manufactured to the most rigid specifications to meet the tough demands of industrial work environment and harsh and hazardous conditions. Depending on the use, hazardous conditions may require glass to be abrasion resistant, thermal shock resistant, liquid resistant, impact resistant, vapor or dust resistant, or explosion resistance to avoid shattering from an internal explosion, particularly important in environments with combustible fumes. Vapor proof glass resists the influx of vapors and gas particles and is generally also liquid resistant. Gillinder Glass is a key supplier in the harsh and hazardous industries with products intended for environments needing vapor tight globes and fixtures with a corrosion and vapor proof aluminum cage. There are several types of vapor proof and waterproof ratings, including IP65, IP66, and IP67, which measure a products water resistance. An IP rating is composed of two numbers. The first number describing the products intrusion protection, or how much it withstands particles entering, which is based on a 0-6 scale. The second number measures the resistance to liquid on a 0-9 scale. These vapor proof globes also offer intrusion protection which is calculated using a system to rate safeguard against dust, particles, or solid objects of certain sizes. These are to ensure any ingress will not damage or impede the performance of internal components with full protection against dust and other particulates, including a vacuum seal, tested against continuous airflow. Gillinder Glass’ clear or colored tempered vapor proof glass is often used for ceiling, pendant, or wall mounted fixtures. A tempered soda-lime glass is generally used and can be produced with multiple finishes in a variety of colors. These “jelly jar” globes are also offered on Gillinderglass.com and include the following open stock options: Gillinder can also manufacture custom sizes, colors, and finishes, such as white enamel (inside), sandblasting, plastic coating, smooth, and inside ribs. Common colors include: amber, aviation blue, opolo, red C, rs green, and traffic green. The chromaticity specifications, measured with CIE A, are as follows: Gillinder’s in-house engineering team precisely test vapor proof glass to confirm chromaticity requirements as well as performing impact and thermal shock resistance tests when needed. As these globes are often used for harsh outdoor locations waterproof requirements also may apply. --- Press Contact: Jackie Conklin- Marketing Specialist: jconklin@gillinderglass.com For other inquiries, please call us at 845-856-5375 or email info@gillinderglass.com References: “The Comprehensive Guide to IP Ratings.” The Comprehensive Guide To IP Ratings | RS Components, https://uk.rs-online.com/web/generalDisplay.html?id=ideas-and-advice%2Fip-ratings.

  • Mold Making- the Cornerstone of Pressed Glass

In 1865 Gillinder Glass was established, and they opened a glass pressing factory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This was only forty years after John P. Bakewell invented the first commercial glass-pressing machine. Blackwell’s invention “quickly led to the mass production of glassware and greatly reduced its cost, leading to glassware being available for everyday use.* Today, Gillinder Glass still hand presses every piece of glass they manufacture. Advances in technology and greater customer demand has allowed Gillinder to start utilizing automated equipment for glass pressing and maximizing efficiencies. Glass pieces are generally made by pouring the molten glass into a mold and having a “plunger” pressed into the iron base. Almost all Gillinder’s molds are made from ductile iron, but some may require an A-2 tool steel or stainless steel may be used. Today, as an ISO 9001:2015 certified company, Gillinder’s Port Jervis factory is held to high standards of manufacturing quality and the in-house mold shop is no exception. Gillinder’s mold shop can collaborate with customers in designing new custom molds or refurbishing existing ones. Gillinder Glass has the capability to manufacture with customer’s existing hand pressed molds. Machine pressed molds can be used by making adjustments to be compatible with current equipment. Mold Shop supervisor, Lewis Still, explains, “Molds that run constantly usually need nothing more than a simple polishing, but sometimes they do need repair work. Average life span on mold equipment is about 5 years. After that, the tooling will start to develop what we call “fire cracks” which are stress fractures in the material from constantly being hot and cold.” Molds are housed in a special atmospherically controlled storage area and maintained in pristine condition after each use to ensure consistent production of the highest quality glass. Gillinder also has the ability to do prototyping and programing. In addition to working with almost all current software systems, the mold shop is equipped with: · Fadal Computer Controlled Vertical Milling Center 3016L · Computer Controlled Bridgeport Horizontal Lathe · Bridgeport Series 2 Vertical Milling Machine · LeBlond Horizontal Lathe · TUR 63 Lathe · Welding and Braising Shop (including gas spray welding) Gillinder has created molds for an array of products including headlights, traffic lights, dog food bowls, kitchenware, and even dental cuspidors. In the Spring of 2022, to further expand the Mold Shop’s capabilities, Gillinder is acquiring an additional CNC milling machine. The CNC milling machine precisely cuts molds from various design software to meet customer’s expectations in design and specification. • Gillinder’s Journey Through Time with Etsy Site Launch

Fond memories of factory tours are commonplace among tourists and locals alike. In addition to Gillinder Glass’ massive manufacturing footprint in Port Jervis, New York, Gillinder also housed a gift shop located in the front of their factory. The historic Gillinder shop was open to the public and attracted historians and glass enthusiasts for twenty years. In May of 2017, Gillinder made the announcement they would be closing the Gillinder store. As Gillinder’s commercial sales grew, so did the need for state-of-the-art testing equipment. This meant, the Gillinder store would be transformed into lab space. Mirroring the bittersweet sentiment of so many Gillinder patrons, Fabien commented, “Thanks for so many memories! Love that little gift shop, but we are so happy and want to extend our congratulatory wishes on such a milestone. This is wonderful news regarding the expansion.” After closing the gift shop, pieces from the Gillinder shop would remain in storage until the 2021 Etsy site launch. Historical reproductions such as the centennial commemorative box, lion head statue, George Washington etched paperweight, and Gillinder Buddha statue would be made available to the public for a limited time. In Spring 2021, through an internship program, Gillinder welcomed Austin Gurda to manage the historical collection of glass pieces. Austin began meticulously sorting hundreds of Gillinder items that had laid in storage for many years. After months of photographing and gathering product details, the Gillinder Etsy site was launched in Fall of 2021. The site has been a hit with customers marveling at the chance to collect pieces of Gillinder’s history. One of many nostalgic Gillinder stories came from Rae after purchasing a Gillinder Glass horsehead bookend to add to her collection. Rae said: “Years ago as a kid in New Jersey, I fell in love with Gillinder Glass. My dad would take me there once a year and buy me something from the shop. I have continued to collect over the years, even after my dad passed away. I was so excited to see the post that some items would be up for sale!... I have added my new purchases to my collection and have my eye on a few more! It was so nice to be able to reminisce about my trips to the shop and spending time with my dad.” The exquisite glass horse bookend was modeled after the 1940s mold and produced after 2011. They are available in white or green and measure 4 ½” in length, 3” in width, are 5 ½” tall, and weigh approximately 2.5 pounds. Other favorite pieces, and factory tour features, included Gillinder's Buddha statue and peacock vases. First produced in the 1930's at Gillinder's Port Jervis factory, the 1990’s reissue of the sought-after Buddha statue has been a Gillinder staple. The peacock vases were iron blow molds, carved by hand using a hammer and chisel. The peacock molds were discontinued in the 1990's. Both historic pieces can be found for sale on Etsy. Austin’s customer service and careful packaging has had customers purchasing again and again. Gillinder’s Etsy site maintains a five-star rating after nearly fifty reviews. After purchasing the “super cute” vintage satin rose colored dog paperweight Jennifer said, “I have ordered from them before and the customer service is the best I have experienced. The items are well packed and I am so impressed with the overall item. I will be ordering again.” The rare glass puppy figurines adorn neck bows and measure approximately 5” tall and come in a variety of colors. They are authentically Gillinder and have “Gillinder Glass” marked on the base. After hundreds of orders and several months overseeing the Etsy site, Austin said of his experience, "So many customers have reached out to share memories about visiting or touring Gillinder as a child with their families!... Our customers are friendly, grateful, and repeat buyers." The collectables are in limited supply and selling quickly.
